PU Coated Leather

Guoyuan's PU coated split leather combines a cow split backing with a polyurethane surface film. It gives footwear and leather goods manufacturers a way to specify surface grain, color and gloss while retaining a natural leather fiber base.

Develop a finish around the details your collection needs: the scale of a pebbled grain, the clarity of a smooth surface, or the contrast between a matte and high-gloss look.

A Layered Construction with Different Roles

Layered construction of PU coated split leather
1

PU Surface Film

The film establishes much of the visible surface: its texture, color and gloss. Film formulation and finishing also influence how the surface responds to rubbing, repeated bending and exposure during use.

2

Bonding Layer

The bonding layer connects the film to the split backing. Its compatibility with both layers matters when the material is folded, flexed or shaped. A visually attractive film still needs an appropriate bond for the intended construction.

3

Cow Split Backing

The backing supplies the natural leather fiber structure. Its thickness and body contribute to the feel of the finished material, so the complete construction should be assessed together rather than selecting the film alone.

Choose the Grain with Release Paper

PU release paper grain reference

Textured release paper acts as a forming surface for the PU film. Its pattern helps establish the grain geometry, including texture size, spacing and relief. A paper reference is therefore a useful starting point when requesting a particular appearance.

PU release paper reference samples

Share the paper supplier and code where available, together with a physical swatch or clear close-up. A commercial paper reference helps narrow the selection, but its availability and compatibility with the proposed film system still need to be checked.

The same texture can look different with a change in color, gloss or coating construction. Final selection should use a finished leather sample, not the release-paper image alone.

Surface Directions to Explore

Surface direction Visual character What to compare on a sample
Smooth or fine grain Clean, restrained appearance Surface evenness and visible handling marks
Pebbled or litchi grain More pronounced grain character Grain size, definition and panel appearance
Matte finish Low-reflection surface Gloss consistency and rubbing response
Mirror or high-gloss finish Strong light reflection Surface clarity and appearance after bending

Grain and gloss are separate choices. A matte finish can carry a grain, and a smooth finish can be developed with different gloss levels.

PU Coated Split Leather Specification Guide

Item Development scope
Base materialCow split leather
Surface constructionPU film with a bonding layer
Reference finished thickness1.0–2.0 mm
TextureAvailable release-paper patterns; reference matching subject to review
Color and glossDeveloped against the agreed visual target
Hand feelSelected through the film and backing combination
SupplyCustom material orders; quantity and terms confirmed by article and color

The reference thickness describes the range, not the thickness of every finish. The approved sample and article specification define the material for an order.

Evaluate the Surface for Its Working Conditions

Flexing Resistance
(shoe components)
Rubbing & Scratch
(bag panels)
Gloss Change
(exposure)
Water Repellency
(moisture)
Heat & Ageing
(heat/hydrolysis)

For a flexing shoe component, assess the film and bond after repeated bending. For an exposed bag panel, consider rubbing, scratching and changes in gloss. These properties answer different questions; one result should not stand in for the others.

If moisture and heat are part of the use environment, include relevant ageing or hydrolysis requirements in the brief. Water repellency, abrasion resistance and hydrolysis resistance are separate properties and should be specified separately.

See the broader material quality and verification information, and use our footwear application guide to relate the material to its intended component.

PU Coated Split Leather Questions

Is PU coated split leather the same as fabric-backed PU material?

No. This range uses cow split leather as its backing. A similar-looking PU surface can also be applied to textile or other substrates, so appearance alone does not identify the base material. Our split leather explains the material families.

Can a supplied grain reference be reproduced exactly?

A reference helps define the target, but an exact match cannot be established from a photograph or grain name. Paper selection, film construction, color and gloss all affect the result. A physical sample is needed to agree an acceptable match.
